The Shepards and the Angels

25 Dec

Luke 2:8-20 ( The Message)

There were sheepherders camping in the neighborhood. They had set night watches over their sheep. Suddenly, God’s angel stood among them and God’s glory blazed around them. They were terrified. The angel said, “Don’t be afraid. I’m here to announce a great and joyful event that is meant for everybody, worldwide: A Savior has just been born in David’s town, a Savior who is Messiah and Master. This is what you’re to look for: a baby wrapped in a blanket and lying in a manger.”

At once the angel was joined by a huge angelic choir singing God’s praises:

Glory to God in the heavenly heights,
Peace to all men and women on earth who please him.

As the angel choir withdrew into heaven, the sheepherders talked it over. “Let’s get over to Bethlehem as fast as we can and see for ourselves what God has revealed to us.” They left, running, and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in the manger. Seeing was believing. They told everyone they met what the angels had said about this child. All who heard the sheepherders were impressed.

Mary kept all these things to herself, holding them dear, deep within herself. The sheepherders returned and let loose, glorifying and praising God for everything they had heard and seen. It turned out exactly the way they’d been told!

It is Christmas Eve

Isaiah 9:6 which says “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”

The Christmas Candy Cane

23 Dec

Look at the Candy Cane
What do you see?
Stripes that are red
Like the blood shed for me
White is for my Savior
Who’s sinless and pure!
“J” is for Jesus My Lord, that’s for sure!
Turn it around
And a staff you will see
Jesus my shepherd
Was born for Me!

The candy Cane symbolizes multiple things. Hold it upright and it looks like a shepherd’s staff. Turn it around and you have the letter J for Jesus. The poem above describes how the red represents the blood of Jesus and the white represents purity. However I have also read that there are candy canes with 3 small bed stripes running around it symbolizing the Trinity – God the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit.

Matthew 1:21 And she will bring forth a Son and you shall call Him Jesus for He will save His people from their sins

Christmas Prayers for Children

20 Dec

Let us all with gladsome voice
Praise the God of heaven,
Who, to bid our hearts rejoice,
His own Son hath given.

O Lord Christ, our Savior dear,
Be Thou ever near us;
Grant us now a glad New Year.
Amen, Jesus, hear us!

O holy Child of Bethlehem,
Descend to us, we pray;
Cast out our sin and enter in.
Be born in us today.

O welcome, little Christmas Guest,
Dear Jesus, from above;
Upon Thy face, so pure and mild,
We see God’s smile of love.

Precious Babe of Bethlehem,
Gift of love to sinful men,
Thou, our Savior, Lord, and King—
May we all Thy praises sing!

Ah! dearest Jesus, holy Child,
Make Thee a bed, soft, undefiled,
Within my heart, that it may be
A quiet chamber kept for Thee.

Fourth Sunday of Advent

19 Dec

Lord Jesus, increase our faith so that we might believe that nothing is impossible with God. May we continue to be a people with dreams and visions of the possible – a human community of understanding and acceptance. May we be ready to risk as Mary did to make these dreams come true. Open us to know the power of Your presence today and everyday. Amen.

My Daily Prayer

6 Dec

I lift up your name

My Lord

My Savior

I pray that your return is near

Until that day I abide in you

I ask for your wisdom to guide me and lead me so that I may do what is on your list today

I trust that you will provide me and my family what we need

Lord I have sinned, please search my heart for things not of you so that I may be forgiven

If I have wronged others I ask that I am the opportunity to ask forgiveness from them

Open my eyes to the temptation that comes my way and give me the strength to overcome it

For those who have wronged me open the doors so that I may forgive them as well.

In Jesus Holy Name

Second Sunday of Advent

5 Dec

Lord Jesus, shower us with Your Spirit. Give us the courage to live out the promises of our Baptism. May we be alive with Your word burning within us. May we speak of Your love with enthusiasm. Most important, help us be messengers of Your care to others. Give us strong and gentle hands to reach out to our sisters and brothers today and everyday. Amen.
