On December 11, 1792, Josef was born into the family Mohr in snow-clad Salzburg, Austria. As a boy he sang in the cathedral choir of his native city. In 1815, Josef was ordained by the Roman Catholic bishop of Salzburg then later became assistant priest at St. Nicholas Church of Oberndorf. One Christmas Eve, he discovered the organ in the church was not working.  Josef quickly wrote the words to this carol and asked the organist, Franz Gruber, to compose the tune. It was sung with guitar accompaniment that evening in December 1818.

Silent night, holy night,
All is calm, all is bright
Round yon virgin mother and Child.
Holy Infant, so tender and mild,
Sleep in heavenly peace,
Sleep in heavenly peace.

Silent night, holy night,
Shepherds quake at the sight;
Glories stream from heaven afar,
Heavenly hosts sing Alleluia!
Christ the Savior is born,
Christ the Savior is born.

Silent night, holy night
Wondrous star, lend thy light;
With the angels let us sing,
Alleluia to our King;
Christ the Savior is born,
Christ the Savior is born!
