How much time are we really saving?

16 Oct

Today I was driving around town running my errands and I noticed I was getting passed by other drivers a lot! I was going the speed limit, 30 mph on crazy curvy road in our town that people pull off of and onto quite frequently. So it made we wonder how much time these people who are driving over the speed limit are actually gaining.

An average trip to the store or picking up the kids in town takes about 10-15 minutes.  When going 5 mph over the speed limit you save 45 seconds to 1 minute 15 seconds on your trip. Going 10 over you save 2-2.5 minutes.

Going over the speed limit 5-10 miles per hour does not save you time however it can save lives, save money, save you from getting a ticket and save your license.

Speeding extends the distance necessary to stop a vehicle. At 20 mph the total stopping distance needed is 69 feet. At 30 mph, the distance needed is 123 feet. At 40 mph, the distance needed is 189 feet which may not be enough distance and time for you to avoid hitting an object or person on the road.

If you hit a pedestrian: At 20 mph 5% will die At 30 mph 45% will die. At 40 mph 85% will die

Is our time (seconds and minutes) that important to risk our lives or others?

Challenge: I have challenged myself and my husband to go the speed limit, No Matter What! Residential, Highway or Freeway. I extend the challenge to you as well. What a great example you can be to others as well as your children who are in the car with you.

Do you think you can hold up to the challenge? or do you think you have to be at the school 45 seconds before I do?

Blessings & Giggles to you & yours,
