27 Sep

Does your child seem to be unhappy and grouchy all the time? How do you get your happy child back? It is normal for us moms to want our children to be happy. The saying goes you are only as happy as your least happy child. It is draining to everyone is around someone who is always low in spirits.

Here are a few suggestions:

Visit your local library and research books about coping with preadolescence girls and boys

Listen to your child. Ask them if their is anything that they would like to share about what they are thinking and feeling.

Talk with your child’s teacher. Ask if they have observed anything about your child. Are they struggling with a specific subject. Do they have any suggestions in what you can do to help.

Be aware of their friendships. Encourage socializing by inviting a friend to join your family in an outing or have a play date.

Make sure your child is getting enough sleep. These years are difficult on a child. The body is working hard all the time, they need their rest. A child that is always tired are more ought to be grouchy and irritable. Establish good sleeping habits for your child. A typical school – child usually needs to sleep about 10 hours every night.

My daughter is 14 and I know what works for her is to let her talk out her feelings and what she’s worried about. I ask her what would be the worst consequence if what she’s worried about actually happens. She usually starts to see that it isn’t as bad as she’s thinking. I remind her that in 5 years she won’t even remember what is troubling her right now. Then I try and take her mind off of it. Dwelling on negative things is no way to solve the problem.
